Now that we’ve shown “Annie,” our hybrid candidate from The Recruiting Rodeo 🐎 Vol. 40 how to tell her professional “story” so that the first person (or machine) reading her RESUME📑 doesn’t define her career for her or misunderstand her, let’s meet another talented hybrid candidate …
Cowgirls and boys🤠
Meet the Hybrid🌪️ Small Business Owner: “John Jones”
John doesn’t have a RESUME📑. Because like many of The Recruiting Rodeo’s 🐎 exceptionally-talented candidates and clients, he’s never needed one. But he does now!
John has been painting homes for friends and neighbors in Framingham, Massachusetts, where he grew up, since high school. Over the past 20 years, he has transformed his Summer painting business into a fully licensed, residential and commercial home improvement juggernaut.
“Jonlin” — a combo of his first name and favorite fish: the Marlin 🐟 (John is an avid sport fisherman), now provides electrical and roofing services, in addition to interior and exterior painting, to approximately one-third of southern New England’s leading, independently-owned hotels, restaurants, marinas and retail shops as well as residential homes.
John’s no longer "the guy on the ladder.” He has four full-time employees, 25 part-time, and office and warehouse space he leases in three different states: Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
Recently, John made his two full-time employees, brothers he has known since high school, into full-fledged partners, with equity stakes in the business.
His partners offered to “buy him out” last year, and John accepted. Once the financing is completed by the end of this month, John plans to formally exit the company he founded and built by the end of 2025 — and begin an active job search for a full-time managerial role at a big-box home improvement store within 30 miles of his house.
Coincidentally, John overheard from one of the contractors in his robust professional network that the Home Depot in his town might be looking for an Assistant Store Manager (aka, “ASM”) soon. Kismet!
So, what does John need if he wants to apply for a job online? Or if someone in his network is thinking about referring him to the Store Manager at his local Home Depot once the position is posted?
You guessed it — a RESUME📑!
